A manager is not the same as an employee, you cannot just evaluate his performance base on how many hours he work or how much he produced, for such measurements are quantitative, not qualitative. A manager can be assessed on his leadership and managerial qualities in at least the following 5 ways:
- Does he Make a Stand? Does he have his own opinion? He can listen to others’ opinions but he must make his stand and stand by his stand. He cannot behave like the road sign above: going south and going north at the same time! However, he must also be ready to change his stand if needed. This is not being indecisive but being very decisive: ready to be wrong and change one’s stand.
- Is he able to see through things, i.e. see things beyond the surface? Like now everyone is saying economy is good, can he see beyond the numbers and realize that the risks of rising interest is very real? See through things also means that he is not swayed by acts but more by substance.
- Can he see things that nobody sees, i.e. visualize the vision? This also includes ignoring things that everybody sees, like ignoring the negative comments and still focus on his vision.
- Can he persevere, go through difficulties and follow-through? Everyone can be a leader when times are good, but how many can stick through the thick and thin and last when everyone has given up?
- Is he able to create and add value to the job? A good manager is one that is creative, not reactive. Instead of reacting to anger, he turns anger into hunger and creates more results. Adding value to the job also means that he can make the job easier to do and really serve the stakeholders.
